Background:

Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), an organization of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), works to improve the living conditions of people in specific regions of the world in the fields of health, education, civil society, and rural development. Affiliated to AKDN are three main foundations in Egypt: AKFE (Aga Khan Foundation Egypt), AKTC (Aga Khan Trust for Culture) and FMFE (First Microfinance Foundation Egypt, of Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance, AKAM). The three foundations, together, contribute to achieving the overall goal of facilitating and supporting institutions and programmes that can respond to social, economic and cultural challenges.

In extending community leadership roles played, Head Start Programme aims at empowering ADAA (Al Darb Al Ahmar) community at institutional as well as individual levels. At the institutional level, the programme aims at developing multiple-level capacities of six civil society organizations : institutional capacity (institutional capacity building trainings), technical capacity (Early Childhood Development Training of Trainers, ECD TOT, trainings) and physical capacity (infrastructure project sub-grants and socio-economic activities). At the individual level, the programme provides vocational trainings to young carpentry practitioners (males) in both technical and as administrative areas of expertise. The programme targets females as well through ECD trainings offered to local young ladies and women.

Scope of work, implementation methodology, deliverables and time frame:

Cairo Demographic data indicate that across the 13 shiakhas, which make up the district of ADAA, there are approximately 17,000 women of reproductive age (15 to 45 years of age), and over 16,000 children under eight (8) years of age. Under Head Start ECD Component, support will be provided to 60 local youth who either are in or seek to enter the early childhood development profession as providers or teachers. A proper set of ECD knowledge and skills will enable them to efficiently adopt this profession, where the more knowledgeable and skilled they become, the more developed their attitudes are and the more marketable and economically improved they straight forward get.

The consultant will be responsible for:

• Based on 'El-Madrasa' ECD curriculum (used in AKF 'Nabta' Program), compose a tailored interactive ECD training course to provide prospected trainees with a set of practical start-up knowledge and skills. Tentative topics to handle basically relate, but not limited, to principles of children development, effective communication skills, active learning approaches and methods, learning materials development, class, time and lesson management. Involved in these activities will be project staff, CSO members and local young girls. The devised course should cover theoretical class lecturing as well as practical implementation at CSOs' KG premises.
• Submitting soft copies of all educational materials, pre- and post- tests.
• Submitting a final report detailing implemented activities, results achieved, challenges encountered and solutions proposed, and sustainability recommendations.
• A total number of 56 training days are assigned and divided among 4 classes of 14 days each with 15 local youth/class. Each group will receive 2 sessions a week with a total of 7 weeks each. All groups work in parallel to each other.
